EU RED directive cybersecurity new regulations, building a digital security barrier
The EU Radio Equipment Directive (RED, Directive No. 2014/53/EU) has been the entry threshold for wireless communication equipment entering the EU market since its mandatory implementation in 2016. In response to the growing cybersecurity threats, the RED Directive has added cybersecurity requirements (d), (e) and (f) in Article 3(3), aiming to improve the network stability of wireless devices, protect consumers' personal data and privacy, and reduce the risk of fraud. Although the enforcement date of this provision has been postponed to August 1, 2025, the market demand for products that comply with the new regulations is imminent.
The draft standard for the RED cybersecurity requirements, FprEN 18031 Final Draft–FprEN 18031, published by the European Commission in May 2024, provides clear guidance on the general safety requirements for radio equipment. This series of standards is divided into three parts: EN 18031-1, EN 18031-2 and EN 18031-3, which correspond to the requirements (d), (e) and (f) of Article 3(3) of the RED Directive, respectively, and cover all radio equipment that connects to the Internet, processes personal data or involves financial payments, such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops, in-vehicle networking components, GPS tracking devices, POS machines, ATM machines, etc.
